From the studio that gave us Blasphemous comes The Stone of Madness, a real-time tactical stealth game set in an 18th-century Spanish monastery. Located high in the Pyrenees, this ancient Jesuit monastery is home to a madhouse and an inquisitorial prison. You play as five prisoners—each tortured by punishment, madness, and despair—who band together to face their deepest fears, fight off insanity, uncover the monastery’s secrets, and try to escape.

Escaping this heavily guarded monastery won’t be easy, but Agnes, Leonora, Eduardo, Amelia, and Alfredo are determined to break free. You’ll alternate control between all five characters, using their unique skills to cast spells, assassinate enemies, distract guards, stun evil spirits, explore hidden areas, and more As you explore the monastery, you’ll need to use your team’s abilities to find clues and useful items but be careful. If you get caught snooping where you shouldn’t, the guards won’t hesitate to punish you.

Each character has their own set of traumas and phobias that you’ll need to keep track of. As you navigate the monastery, it’s crucial to manage their mental health. If you push them too far, triggering their fears or phobias, it’ll drain their sanity, leading to negative effects like paranoia, dementia, or violent outbursts. These events change how the character is played, so you’ll need to be strategic with how you handle each one.

There are two full campaigns to play, each with its own story, objectives, special characters, and surprises.

During the day, you’ll want to sneak around, explore, and gather materials since guards are more easily distracted. But when night falls, the paranormal threats in the monastery come out to play, making it harder to keep your sanity in check. Nighttime is perfect for planning your escape, but if you wander the monastery after curfew, you’ll face stricter security and an even bigger challenge. Sometimes, though, the risk is worth it.

The visuals in The Stone of Madness are hand-painted and animated frame by frame, inspired by the haunting style of 18th-century artist Francisco de Goya.
